Teenagers- Advancing Our Society Or Major Pain In The Butt?

Last week I was watching The Nature Of Things with David Suzuki. It was discussing teenagers having a very important role in the advancement of our society from an evolutionary standpoint.  I thought that this was such an interesting topic so I just had to share it with all you mommas out there who are currently dealing or enduring life with teens.  Perhaps this can change your perception of their behavior and make this time a little more tolerable.

The ‘teenager phase’ is a relatively new phenomena that hasn’t always been part of human development.  It began about 350,000 years ago when there was an advancement in our brain mass.  This is when we developed a larger mental capacity due to the formation of the prefrontal cortex.  This increased our life span by about 10 years and it took longer for our brain to develop as it was capable of doing much more than before this time.  This was the beginning of ‘teenage-hood’.  It is a time of integration of our limbic brain (innate instinct and emotional portion of our brain) and the prefrontal cortex.   Just to clarify the limbic system is often referred to as the lizard brain, because it is the primitive brain that controls our automatic functions such as breathing.  The prefrontal cortex is what controls our memories, allows for us to re-experience our past, understand consequence and also have the foresight to plan for the future.  It is a highly evolved part of our brain that sets us apart from other species.

During teenage years we begin to integrate the two parts of our brain, so its no wonder why teens appear to be taking such big risks and challenging boundaries set by others.  They are simply trying to make sense of the world while forming their own opinions about things.

But the amazing thing about this time is that teenagers have the capacity to use their prefrontal cortex, but being new at it they don’t have the perceived limitations that adults usually put on themselves, either from adhering to wildly accepted opinions or through past experiences that shape their current reality.  So essentially they are willing to take big risks without the awareness of possible repercussions of their actions.

So why should we see this time as a potential to evolve or advance our society? Simply put, because they have the intelligence of an adult without the set limitations.  This is the single thing that usually makes parents crazy, but allowing them to ‘safely‘ explore this intelligence, might enable them create change in our world.  They gave a few examples of what this integration might look like.  One teenager was engaging in high risk (foolish) behaviours like the ‘Jackass’ depicted stunts such as driving on top of a car and jumping into a lake trying to clear a hurdle of some sort or breaking things on top of their head.  To the adult this is ridiculous behavior that needs to be prevented, and I am certainly not advocating that we should let them engage in such activities.

On the other hand though, a 16 year old boy working in the cystic fibrosis research lab at Sick Kids Toronto, conducted an experiment that has created big change in that field.  Had he listened to the limiting beliefs posed on him by adults he would have never made such a discovery, as he was told what he was trying to do was impossible.  Simply put, his lack of limitations and total belief that anything is possible has created positive and profound change in his field of work.  If it hadn’t been for this 16 year old creative mind the discovery may not have been made.  This is why we need to celebrate the teenage brain and allow them some room to discover and shape their reality.  It is this crucial period of integration that can allow adults to reassess their reality and not be so absolute in their thinking.

I am a big believer that a parent is to provide guidance and act as a role model for their child.  And it is extremely important to give them safe boundaries to work within and let them make their own assessments and judgements about the world around them.  Your children are also your biggest potential for growth, so make a concerted effort not to get in the way of their self expression.  You may also have a lot to learn from them and perhaps their lack of limitations can allow you to see the world in a whole new light.

Verdict= Advancing our society while challenging us in every way on a daily basis.  We need them and their wonderful integrating brains to think up new and possibly better ways of doing things to bring us to new heights.

So next time try to celebrate your teenagers when they are seemingly acting wild and trying things beyond your comprehension, what they discover may just change the world! :)

Skin-to-Skin: Bonding with Baby

You are handed the most amazing little bundle and you count ten perfect fingers, ten perfect toes and draw in a deep breath as you meet your baby face-to-face for the very first time… There are simply no words to describe how incredible those precious moments are! While the world around you may be tuned out in those first few moments of bliss, an important thing for you moms-to-be to remember is these moments set the stage for your bond with your child.

From a health standpoint, skin-to-skin contact in the first few hours of your baby’s life is essential. It is the transitional stage for baby from being in the womb to becoming oriented and acclimatized to his or her new environment. Beyond the fact that it feels amazing to finally see and cuddle with your little one, there are numerous benefits of skin-to-skin bonding time.

  • Reduces crying at birth since being nuzzled on mom is a baby’s natural habitat.  It is the only place they want to be and babies will show signs of stress, such as crying, when taken away from their natural habitat
  • Allows baby’s instinct to root and latch to the breast naturally without force (higher likelihood if not medicated)
  • Allows mom to breastfeed successfully – baby’s ability to latch is better
  • Increased likelihood of mom breastfeeding in the first four months of life and those who are skin-to-skin tend to breastfeed longer
  • Thermoregulation: helps your baby regulate his or her body temperature, a brilliantly designed maternal instinct. Those moms who stay in close contact with their babies are able to regulate their own body temperature to help keep baby comfortable
  • Regulates and stabilizes baby’s heart rate and breathing rate
  • May decrease postpartum depression risk
  • Maintains healthier blood sugar levels in baby
  • Begins to develop baby’s immune system since being colonized with same bacteria as mom
  • Improves maternal attachment: increases oxytocin a.k.a. ‘love hormone’ in mom, helping her to bond appropriately with her baby
  • Helps uterus return to its normal size
  • Helps increase infant weight gain
  • Boosts milk production
  • Stimulates baby’s brain
  • Shortens hospital stay
  • Promotes kangaroo care – continued baby-wearing and connectivity
  • Lowers stress levels for mom – skin-to-skin is empowering for mom

There are so many benefits to skin-to-skin bonding! You might be wondering if there are any potential risks… the answer? Not one!

These benefits have also been found true for premature babies and babies on oxygen. They have found that ‘skin-to-skin babies’ required less oxygen than those who were separated from mom, and had a lower rate of premature infant mortality.

Mothers and babies have been taking advantage of the benefits of skin-to-skin bonding since the beginning of time, but as the birth process became more medicalized, routine separation has become standard. As you can imagine, swaddling prevents baby from naturally interacting with mom. It’s time we take active roles in our medical experiences and assess whether certain practices are in the best interests of you and your baby.

How to be skin-to-skin:

Mom should be in a reclined and relaxed position. Being inclined prevents suffocation and allows for baby to clear breathing passageways. Baby should be placed vertically between breasts. Always cover baby with warm blanket.

If you have a birth plan, birth partner, doula or midwife, let them know – ahead of time – how important your skin-to-skin bonding time is to you and request that you not be separated from your baby during the first 1-2 hours after birth. This will help ensure your wishes are respected and that you enjoy your first bonding experience uninterrupted by anyone.

It is normal and instinctual to be connected with baby as much as possible and as early as possible. A great way to confirm this is to look at other mammal species; after all, we are mammals, too! Observing other mammals after birth, you will notice that they are ‘skin-to-skin’, they feed on demand and they carry or stay close to their babies at all times. We could learn a lot from observing other mammals’ natural instincts!

Wishing you a very loving and special skin-to-skin bonding time with your sweet newborn baby!

In great health & happiness,

Dr. Michelle

Summer Peach Crumble (Gluten Free)

Here is a delicious summer treat that you can happily feed your whole family.   I have made it organic, gluten free and with ghee (clarified butter, making it less allergenic).  You could certainly modify the recipe by using coconut oil as a replacement for ghee if you would like to also make it dairy free.

I used local Ontario peaches.  I’m not sure if you have noticed that the local fruit has been so flavourful this year.  I heard on the radio that we can thank the lack of rain for the flavourful produce.  They are more concentrated in flavour and I must admit I am enjoying them immensely.

I have had a lot of patients lately asking what they can feed their children for a treat when they are eating a more whole food clean diet.  Fruit desserts like this one are the perfect solution.  Let me know what you think once you have tried it, it was a huge hit in our home!

Ingredients

  • 6 fresh peaches – peeled, pitted and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic almond extract
  • 1 cup Bob’s red mill organic gluten free all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup organic oats
  • 3/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup ghee

Directions

  1. Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and grease an 8 inch square baking dish.
  2. Place the peaches in the bottom of the baking dish, and sprinkle them with almond extract.
  3. In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt. Melt the butter or ghee and add into the flour mixture.  Will be a liquid with the ghee and maple syrup.
  4. Pour the flour mixture in an even layer over the top of the peaches, and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, until the peaches are bubbling and the topping is browned.

* Top it off with your favourite dairy free ice cream! (Coconut, rice, almond, soy)

Get creative in the kitchen with local fruits and veggies, whole foods can taste incredible!

Enjoy!

In great health & happiness,

Dr. Michelle

Live Like You Give A Damn: Laughter Heals

Did you know that the average baby laughs about 300 times per day and the average adult only laughs about 20 times per day? It was evident to me that children appear to laugh more than adults, but seeing these numbers is staggering to me.  We must start a laughter revolution!

I think we all know that smiling, laughter and being positive is important, but why is it healthy? Research has demonstrated that it benefits immune function, pain tolerance and illness symptoms.  It is a self care tool to cope with stress, gives a sense of perspective, and provides a  physical release for accumulated tension.  Feeling positive and experiencing laughter are an important part of well-being.

Its no wonder why they have implemented laughter/ comedy rooms and clown care units in hospitals, it has been demonstrated that laughter and joy are healing.

If we know of its benefits and it feels so good to do then why are we so deficient in laughter?  Perhaps our daily responsibilities are weighing us down. Or are we getting caught up in a pattern of negative thinking and taking life too seriously? Often times what needs to happen is a shift in perspective.

So what does this statistic mean to me? I think that we are born innately happy and joyous and we need to find a way to rise above our day to day stresses and experience the world with child-like excitement.  This is within us we just need to tap into our inner wisdom to see life positively and find the humor in all that we do.

What can you do to increase your daily laughter quota:

  • LOL: Truly force yourself to laugh out loud, it feels good and laughter is contagious so perhaps you can share the positive effects of laughter with others.
  • If this feels really unnatural to you try watching a funny movie.  Either a movie you know that is funny or ask people around you what ones they find funny.
  • Read a funny book.  Ellen Degenerous’s ‘Seriously, I’m Kidding’ is a hoot! I typically read to fall asleep but this book keeps me awake from laughing so much.
  • Spend time with others you find positive and lighthearted.  Being in that space may encourage you to feel the same.
  • Do something daily that makes you stretch out of your comfort zone and find the humour in your awkwardness. I believe surround myself with friends who celebrate their own and our collective awkwardness.  We do ridiculous things together, but we also laugh often.

Why is it so important to start laughing and smiling? With all the relationship counseling I have been involved in one thing has been made clear to me: couples who laugh and have fun together, stay together.  It is so important for healthy relationship functioning. We have identified that it is it good for your health, but it is also good for your mind and makes your day to day life far more enjoyable.  Lately I have been challenging patients to imagine themselves looking back on their life, what does it look like?  What would your life look like?  What type memories do you want to make and how do you want to be remembered by your family? If we thought this way more often we might challenge our negative thoughts and make a greater attempt to enjoy the small moments in our life instead of stressing about how things should be.  I challenge you to see life more positively and laugh out loud just a little more often.

Here is an affirmation you can say to start each and everyday when you wake up.  Affirmations help us to be reminded of what we want to start focussing our energy and thoughts on.  They also help us to reframe or replace our current thoughts.

Affirmation: I cheerfully and lightheartedly enjoy my day.

Wishing you much joy and laughter!

Summertime Fun!

Summer is in full force and what a beautiful summer it has been so far!  There are so many great things about the summertime, such as: being outdoors, BBQs, splash pads and the sun.  Although there is so much to be excited about, you want to ensure you are doing everything possible to make it a memorable and happy summer.  Here are some tips on having a wonderful summer, naturally!

  1. Coconut water: Nature’s perfect electrolyte! On extra hot days or prolonged adventures outside, you will likely be getting your sweat on, so you need to ensure that you are replenishing the lost electrolytes.  There are so many electrolyte / sport drinks available, but often times, they are unnecessarily high in refined sugar and artificial food colourings.  A great way to prevent sunstroke from developing is to ensure you are replenishing your electrolytes, especially while playing sports outside.  Coconut water is the perfect solution!
  2. Natural Vitamin D: It is becoming very prevalent, especially in our northern location, to supplement vitamin D to prevent deficiencies. But when the sun is shining we should take advantage of getting our daily dose naturally! So how much is too much? Depending on your pigmentation, the amount of direct sunlight you require will vary.  If very fair, you likely only need a few minutes (3-5 minutes). Medium to dark skin requires anywhere from 15-20 minutes of sun daily or longer without sunscreen.  Remember that when wearing sunscreen you are blocking the body’s ability to naturally produce vitamin D.
  3. Sun protection: After you have got your daily dose of vitamin D, it is very important to protect your skin with a natural and effective sunscreen.  Excessive sun exposure does put you at higher risk of developing skin cancer – this is well known and that’s why I think we rarely ever expose our skin to sunlight without protection.  This has caused a swing in the opposite direction and now we are seeing a large part of the population with vitamin D deficiency as a result.  Just like everything else in life, we need to strike a balance.  My favorite natural sunscreens are by Substance, Weleda and Green Beaver.  Don’t forget that a big hat or clothing provides adequate protection from the sun.
  4. Bug off: Citronella candles and essential oil are very effective at keeping mosquitoes away.  Keep those candles stocked for your cottage or backyard and keep some essential oils on hand for when you go to the park or go camping.  Lemon scent is also a natural bug repellant so keeping boiled lemon water near- by can be helpful.  Another great way to protect yourself from those mighty little pests is by using screened tents around your picnic table and on your patio.
  5. Cooling foods: What better way to beat the heat than by eating foods that help you feel cool internally.  Just like when you crave a hot soup in the winter, nothing is more refreshing then something chilly in the summertime.  This style of seasonal eating ensures your body stays in balance according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.  My favorite cool foods are watermelon, salads, sprouts, cucumbers, apples, lemons & limes.

Now, get outside and play!

In great health & happiness,

Dr. Michelle

Date & Coconut Rolls

A simple treat that is absolutely delicious! We always have our house stocked with these treats as they are a family favourite.  Dates are naturally very sweet and are high in fiber. They contain copper, magnesium, manganese and potassium which are all very important for cardiovascular health, proper muscle function and wound healing.  They also contain B’s, C, D, A & K vitamins.  Coconut is amazing, I talk about it all the time, they have many health benefits and they are a great thing to be added to any treat.  Both of these items can be found at your local grocer and of course should be organic.

Our son loves to snack on these rolls and it is safe for them to try once they have enough teeth to chew and have introduced them individually between 9-12 months of age.  If you are worried about choking you can put them in your nuby or  slice the roll into small pieces. They melt in your mouth which is also a great benefit for little ones.

Ingredients:

  • 4 dates: Medjool, Bard Valley or any other organic option you find
  • 1/2 cup Organic coconut flakes

Instructions:

Finely chop the dates until made into a paste.  Be sure to remove the pit.  Once finely chopped roll into one long roll and chop into equal parts.  Once you have made your rolls, roll them with the coconut flakes and you are done.  Easy!

Makes 4 rolls

Enjoy!
